URC Olympics Information Day
Posted: 19 May 2010 10:14 AM PDT

Saturday 4 September, London

In  just over two years the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics will be here, quite literally here, in the UK.   And with them come a once in a lifetime opportunity for churches to serve and participate in mission, outreach and hospitality.
Churches of every denomination will be at the very heart of the Games and we want to make sure that the URC plays its part too; whether it’s hosting the families of athletes, galvanising your young people to become volunteers or by organising community events during the Games – or something else entirely – we want the URC to be involved.
At Church House the Communications and Mission departments have been meeting and talking Olympics for a few months, and we’d like the synods to join in the conversation.  On Saturday 4 September we’re holding  an Olympics planning and information day in east London to explore these opportunities, and we’re aiming for at least one representatitive from every synod.
We’re  working on the programme now, but we hope it will include short presentations from the ecumenical  Olympic organisation ‘More than Gold’ and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games Ltd (LOCOG). There will also be input from URC ministers who have already engaged with the potential of the Games, as well as plenty of time for facilitated conversation and feedback – and we’re also hoping to tour the Olympic site …
The day will take place in The Viewtube (www.theviewtube.co.uk) in east London, and will kick off with coffee at 10.30, ending at 4.30pm. We’re looking for an ‘olympic representative’ from each synod – someone who sees the potential of the Games, and can both enthuse and motivate others to make things happen.
There is no charge for the day but we expect synods to meet the travel costs of their representative(s).
To reserve a place on the tour we would need the name of your representative, and a firm commitment to attend, by Tuesday 1 June.
With every good wish,
Gill
